pokey and gumby were clay-mation. little figures made out of clay and they filmed cartoons shooting each frame, one at a time. tim burton used the same technique for The Corpse Bride...maybe some others, too.
I like claymation. One of my favorites cartoons or how ever you call it is a French video called L'Homme aux bras ballants or The man with the hanging arms. Please check it out Im pretty sure u r going to like it too :)
